Preconception Care

It is recognized that appropriate preconception care improves pregnancy outcome, particularly when this is done at least one month before attempted conception. We recommend that preconception care include daily intake of prenatal vitamins or other multi-vitamins (containing at least 400 mcg of folic acid). It is also recommended that you abstain from alcohol and smoking, reduce caffeine intake to no more than 1-2 small cups of coffee each day (less than 200 mg total). It is good idea to check the caffeine content in the beverages that you consume, as many women are unaware of the high caffeine content of some beverages. A balanced diet is recommended to maintain a healthy body weight. Moderate exercise is reasonable while attempting pregnancy, although you may be advised to reduce the intensity of exercises if you are undergoing treatment with fertility medications. We also may recommend prenatal testing before you begin your treatment.
