Gestational Carrier - Following Embryo Transfer

Gestational Carrier - Main Page

Following Embryo Transfer

The gestational carrier will start progesterone support the day before egg retrieval and continue it through the first pregnancy test. The progesterone is taken in the form of the intramuscular injection and vaginal capsules. Both prescription for the medication and instructions to administer these injections will be provided by our Nurse Coordinator.

Follow-up Blood Test and Appointment

The gestational carrier will be asked to return for a blood test (pregnancy results) approximately 13-15 days after egg retrieval. We prefer to do this test in our laboratory. Arrangements can be made by patients who live outside the area to have their blood drawn in their home town. The intended parents and the carrier will be called that afternoon with the results of the test.

If the carrier is pregnant, we will repeat the test two days later and then schedule ultrasound appointments. If the carrier is not pregnant, we recommend a follow up call or an appointment with the physician to discuss future plans, and to answer questions. It may also be useful to make a follow up appointment with our counselor to put an “emotional closure” on the cycle and to facilitate planning and decision making.

Diet and Activity

The procedures and requirements outlined can be stressful and emotionally draining. During a gestational carrier cycle, there are no restrictions on activity except as stated immediately after the embryo transfer. We recommend daily prenatal vitamins and a good well -balanced diet throughout the process. We ask the gestational carrier to refrain from sexual intercourse from the time of the final ultrasound prior to egg retrieval and until the first ultrasound of pregnancy.
